Apple Edge Cache (AEC) is Apple supplied and managed hardware
Do they have something against using dashes?
- derision 7y agoWhere would dashes be placed here?
- kick 7y ago"Apple-supplied." That's what they do elsewhere: https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT202471 https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT202471 https://support.apple.com/guide/terminal/script-management-with-launchd-apdc6c1077b-5d5d-4d35-9c19-60f2397b2369/mac https://support.apple.com/guide/terminal/script-management-w... https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT201954 https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT201954 For less ambiguity, I should have used the term "hyphen," but imagined it would be clear.
- briandear 7y agoFascinating. A hyphen and a dash are two completely different things. A dash isn’t ambiguous at all, it’s literally the wrong word. Those who live in glass houses.. https://www.grammarly.com/blog/hyphens-and-dashes/ https://www.grammarly.com/blog/hyphens-and-dashes/
- kick 7y agoDigitally, they're _the exact same thing,_ represented by the exact same code point:* https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hyphen-minus https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hyphen-minus The figure dash _literally_ serves the same purpose as the hyphen: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dash#Figure_dash https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dash#Figure_dash ASCII was limited, compromises were made, and "dash" and "hyphen" became interchangeable. Most style guides accept both under the term "dash": https://www.chicagomanualofstyle.org/qanda/data/faq/topics/HyphensEnDashesEmDashes/faq0002.html https://www.chicagomanualofstyle.org/qanda/data/faq/topics/H... * Unicode has changed this somewhat, though not perfectly. Bonus: https://dictionary.cambridge.org/us/grammar/british-grammar/hyphens https://dictionary.cambridge.org/us/grammar/british-grammar/... Hyphens are a form of dash (-) which we use between words or parts of words.
- jsjohnst 7y agoFeels very disingenuous to critique grammar, while using bad grammar yourself, and then rebuke the person who calls it out politely.
- ucs 7y agoA copy editor might even have employed suspended hyphens: "Apple-supplied and -managed hardware" —only to be quickly overruled by the marketing folks, who’d probably frown upon such a construction.
- kick 7y agoAbsolutely this!
- wilg 7y agoMy guess is that it's a simple mistake that isn't important. (Although I suspect you know that.)
- kick 7y agoOh, probably, but it's still confusing that so many companies worth billions won't get good copy editors.
- briandear 7y agoSure, that’s the important question to ask about this announcement. Apple could literally cure cancer and someone would complain about the kerning on the announcement.
- kick 7y agoWhen literally all of your value comes from "being the most aesthetic tech company," and you intentionally target perfection, people are going to nitpick. Apple deserves this. The product they're presenting isn't significant, and other people had already made fine points on it, so I pointed out something that I care about that was on-topic instead.
- jsjohnst 7y ago> The product they're presenting isn't significant To you maybe, to the target audience however? > other people had already made fine points on it, so I pointed out something that I care about that was on-topic instead. So you didn’t have anything of value to add to the conversation about the topic, and instead you went off an an entirely tangential rant and then got butt hurt when someone pointed out the irony in the wording of your own rant.
- kick 7y agoIt is on-topic; the copy is relevant to the post. Further, the product is not technically interesting. It's a CDN with an Apple logo on it.
- dang 7y agoPlease don't do this. The cost of the effect is greater than the benefit of the correction.
