Classical works use colour in ways that are confusing to read. You either have to accept that it is describing a fantasy, or that the author's concept of colours is different than ours. I had wondered if there was any example from own language of this, in order to get the benefit of that perspective. This seems to be it. Perhaps we had a name for brown before orange. Whereas other colours tend to be named for the saturated version. Has cultivation changed citrus colours, as with carrots?
