OpenPush could be very valuable for open source Android apps once it is fully developed. Currently, open source Android apps that do not depend on Google Play Services are using WebSocket or Server-Sent Events (SSE) for push notifications. For example, Signal falls back to WebSocket when Firebase Cloud Messaging (FCM) is not available.
Tutanota published a blog post explaining how they deliver push notifications to their Android app with SSE instead of FCM:

OpenPush would reduce the amount of work needed to implement push notifications compared to the made-from-scratch implementations developed by Signal and Tutanota.
