Keep it practical. Find the minimum amount needed to be able to use it in practice and then just start using what you learned and improve your knowledge as you move along. From my experience, this has always worked tremendously. To the point that I can't learn any other way. I practically have to learn new things or improve old skills on a daily basis. This has helped me with both speed and motivation.
