Ask HN: Managed Databases – Your Experiences

If you are a small business or solo developer, what has been your experience with using a managed database service (e.g. Digital Ocean, Amazon Aurora, Heroku etc)? Have you found the service reliable and the performance good? Would you recommend a managed service over hosting an RDMS yourself, with all the maintenance that entails (but lower cost)?
