Love this. Etymonline is one of my favorite websites, and often my first-choice dictionary (even though its word corpus is smaller than other dictionaries), because IME understanding the roots and origins of a word help me remember and use it better. It's the one dictionary I enjoy looking up.
Just in case someone hasn't seen it before... ;-)
If you're an etymonline fan, I would venture that you might find interesting "You’re probably using the wrong dictionary" by James Somers: http://jsomers.net/blog/dictionary http://jsomers.net/blog/dictionary
- egypturnash 7y agoI can’t upvote this enough, that dictionary link is so wonderful. I’ve had the 1913 Webster’s dictionary on my Mac for years thanks to that blog post and it’s so useful for helping to find just the right word.
- dredmorbius 7y agoWebster-1913 is also included in the default dict/dictd English-langauge dictionary on Debian, Ubuntu, etc. https://packages.debian.org/buster/dict-gcide https://packages.debian.org/buster/dict-gcide
- bradknowles 7y agoI regret that I have but one upvote to give. I thank you and the OP. Until now, I didn’t know that I needed these things in my life.
- jacobolus 7y agoLet me recommend people interested in words check out C.S. Lewis’s book Studies in Words https://amzn.com/B01GEROZMQ/ https://amzn.com/B01GEROZMQ/, which takes a handful of words and extends their analysis far beyond anything you could find in a comprehensive dictionary. People might also get some use out of Garner’s Modern American Usage https://amzn.com/0195382757 https://amzn.com/0195382757. - beerandt 7y agoIn a slightly different direction, there's also The Mother Tongue by Bill Bryson, which is more of a humourous explanation of English quirks. https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/29.The_Mother_Tongue https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/29.The_Mother_Tongue
- dredmorbius 7y agoA favourite as well, and the bio is so redolent of the 1990s-era Web that I thought it might be illuminating here, both for those who were there, and the many who were not. Etymonline is also a labour of love, though one that has real costs. It's supported by donations and schwag sales, and I strongly encourage anyone who can to help with the site's funding. https://www.patreon.com/etymonline https://www.patreon.com/etymonline http://www.cafepress.com/etymonline http://www.cafepress.com/etymonline No affiliation myself other than as an exceptionaly satisfied user.
