To be fair, I run 2 4K monitors at 60hz and I don’t hear my fans doing normal work (Excel, Firefox, PyCharm, Jupiter Labs). I use a DisplayLink hub (idk if that matters, but I’ve heard DisplayLink is driven by CPU)
However, when I watch a 1080p movie, no matter what player, on just the laptop display, the mouse cursor feels sluggish and my fans are on 50-75% at all times.
- kevingadd 7y agoDisplayLink for 4k60 involves compression, yes. So it's probably driving the monitor through a different flow and relying more on the CPU instead of relying on the GPU (the latter will naturally increase GPU heat dissipation)
- TheTon 7y agoIt sounds like something is forcing the window manager to composite your cursor rather than leaving it as a hardware overlay. That’s the usual cause of sluggish feeling cursor. Now, as to what’s doing that, it could be AirPlay mirroring or perhaps some screen capture/sharing software, or maybe it is related to your displays.

- _bxg1 7y agoI have this happen too, on my 2014 at work. In Chrome, like clockwork, any time I watch a video that isn't on YouTube my fans spin up to the point where it's distracting. Not sure if I've had it affect my mouse cursor, though. I do have a 1080p monitor plugged in but I never have fan issues outside of watching videos.
