wgpu/WebGPU is way less verbose. I don't want to write gfx-rs or Vulkan directly when experimenting with new techniques, unless I absolutely need maximum performance when testing. Only when I want to deploy something to production will I write in those low-level APIs.
- adamnemecek 7y agoDo you think there will be much to gain from using Vulkan as opposed to WebGPU?
- pcwalton 7y agoProbably highly workload dependent and impossible to answer in a general way.
- shmerl 7y agoThat sounds reasonable. So you see WebGPU becoming the good general purpose higher level API built on top of good foundation (like Vulkan) that Khronos mentioned was missing in the Vulkan effort?
- adamnemecek 7y agoI definitely do. Like you can get to 90% perf using a cross-platform API. And to fine tune, you can probably just contribute some perf improvements to the implementation instead of rewriting it.
- Jasper_ 7y agoThe buffer mapping strategy is still a big perf pitfall, but it could be solved with an extension.
- pcwalton 7y agoI certainly hope so!
- shmerl 7y agoIs it feasible to implement it for GNM / PlayStation, for instance through adding that target for gfx-rs? I've heard for example Godot engine can't even target it, due to it being very hostile towards anything open (requiring NDA for any kind of integration).
- pjmlp 7y agoMonogame has PS4 support, one just needs to be open minded and not API religious. http://www.monogame.net/2014/03/23/monogame-for-playstation-4/ http://www.monogame.net/2014/03/23/monogame-for-playstation-...
- shmerl 7y agoDid Sony give them permission to avoid the NDA? Otherwise, how did they implement it, when NDA prevents using open source licensing?
- pjmlp 7y agoAs I mentioned, "one just needs to be open minded and not API religious.". Bashing about how companies handle 3D APIs will take you nowhere on the games industry, as we discussed multiple times.
- shmerl 7y agoYou mentioned some flamebait claim, without any substance. If you can't elaborate (like provide a link to the actual source for instance), I'd assume it's a fake, and their PS implementation is not open source and you are simply trolling, like usual. The whole point of an NDA is to prevent access to the source without authorization. I.e. incompatible with open source by definition.
