Moon has nothing useful on it other than H3 -- and it doesn't really make us a multi-planet species in the sense we're protected from cosmic dangers (gamma ray burst, red dwarf etc) as the moon is relatively as vulnearable as the Earth to these.

- haarts 7y agoGoing to Mars won't save us from a gamma ray burst either. Not sure what you mean by red dwarf but I take it that you mean an event on the scale of a gamma ray burst. Mars ain't good enough for that. I'd be curious to hear about events which would wipe out Earth and the moon but leave Mars intact.
- Infernal 7y agoBy red dwarf I believe the GP means later phases of the star cycle when the sun increases in size and intensity.
- est31 7y agoThat's hundreds of millions of years into the future. It's further away from us than the dinosaurs. Even if we never went to Mars (which we absolutely should), it would have been a major achievement had we survived for so long.
- e2le 7y agoI thought the moon had minerals, everything you need to grow an independent colony. I'm not sure saying it only has H3 is entirely accurate.
- jcranmer 7y agoI think you meant Helium-3 instead of H₃ (an ion mostly found in gas clouds in space) or Hydrogen-3 (an isotope with a half life of a decade or so).
- s_dev 7y agoI did -- thankyou. He3.
