I don't think "less car traffic means less shoppers" is true at all. If you look at any store on market street the majority of patrons did NOT drive there; and

If you look at any store on market street the majority of patrons did NOT drive there; and pedestrians are more likely to stop at multiple stores instead of "one and done." A liveable, walkable downtown means that people can stop at stores and restaurants on the way to/from work in a way that just isn't convenient when driving.
