NextCloud was started as a fork of OwnCloud by a bunch of OwnCloud devs that were unhappy with the direction the product was taking. You can think of it in much the same way as OpenOffice vs LibreOffice: devs fork to make a new product, the "original" product stagnates and is mostly used for rent-seeking. The downside of both is that, to my ears, both "OpenOffice" and "OwnCloud" better signify to outsiders what the product accomplishes, while "LibreOffice" and "NextCloud" really don't, unless you're already familiar with the product or product history.
