"Water closet" or WC is hiding the meaning just as much as "washroom", in my opinion. Both imply a room with washing facilities. Calling the room a toilet just sounds odd to me, because the toilet is in the room, but I understand why it's used like that. I've also heard "I'm going to use the [toilet] facilities".
