I mean, the Kindle is the same in that regard (not too big, waterproof, and easily sideloadable) but I believe Kobo also does tracking. I think you can technically unregister a Kindle and use it only with sideloaded books. I'm not sure, but Onyx (http://onyxboox.com/ http://onyxboox.com/) probably don't track.
