I suspect it's because the mobile app does a bunch of device-side caching and the web doesn't. Definitely their front end performance is nothing to call home about, I remember filing a ticket about slowness and being replied that 4 seconds to start painting the screen (not done loading) was "excellent performance" according to their metrics.
