Why are Google and Facebook in the same jail?
What breach of privacy is Google guilty of?
- prophesi 7y agoHistorically speaking, Google is the one who innovates ground-breaking privacy-violating technology, and Facebook copies them a year or two later with much less tact.
- senthil_rajasek 7y agoName the privacy violating technology. How and please be specific. I can give examples of FB violating user privacy. Cambridge Analytica.

They are the pioneers of https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Surveillance_capitalism https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Surveillance_capitalism For specific technologies: Their search engine. Their Ad network. Google Maps / StreetView. Android OS. Google Home. Google Nest. Google Chrome. Chromebooks.
- newscracker 7y agoThere are too many to list. An online search is a better idea. Here are two instances: Google was (and probably still is) tracking your location on Android even when you turned off location services and storing it against your account. Google signed you in automatically into Chrome whenever you signed in to a Google property. This change removed the ability to keep your Chrome browsing data strictly locally. After some Internet outrage, this was reversed.

- sbmthakur 7y agoHow's that information relevant here?
- senthil_rajasek 7y agoI gave Google permission to show that. They have done a good job.

- sp332 7y agoThe ad network?
- senthil_rajasek 7y agoHow? All the info about me is with Google and no 3rd party knows my private info.
- sp332 7y agoFirst, I'd rather Google not have it. I consider Google having it to be a breach of my privacy. But besides that, any time someone clicks an ad, Google gives information about that person to the advertiser.
- senthil_rajasek 7y agoYou can absolutely tell google not to store your information. When you buy a shoe with your credit card at a store you are giving your personal information, isn't clicking on an ad similar?
- sp332 7y agoYes, I would also be ticked off if the shoe store sold off my personal info, or really used it for any reason other than selling me shoes.
- senthil_rajasek 7y agoYou can remain anonymous with Google. With Facebook you just cannot be an anonymous user.
- newscracker 7y ago> You can absolutely tell google not to store your information ...except for all the times when Google did collect and store your information despite you telling it not to (look online for location tracking on Android).
- cattlemansgold 7y agoHe is saying that he is uncomfortable with so much detailed and important information being owned by one entity, not explicitly accusing Google of leaking his info.
- senthil_rajasek 7y agoThen it's two separate articles. Google and Facebook are not the same when it comes to privacy. This article throws them together in the same bucket and it's really unfair to Google.
- fenwick67 7y ago> What breach of privacy is Google guilty of Some people would consider tracking users across the entire web and selling ads based on their behavior to be disrespectful of privacy. Google hasn't had any big fuck-ups like Facebook with CA, but ultimately they both are advertising companies that owe their success to selling personalized ads.
- senthil_rajasek 7y agoThey are very different ad companies. One shows ads along side search results based on what you are looking for... FB snoops on me and shoves cereal ads at me like street corner flyer pushers.
- newscracker 7y agoCorrection, Google shows ads based on what you search for, which locations you visit, who you communicate with, what kind of photos you take, who’s in the photos you take and so on. All the data collected by Google is intended and used to shove ads to you, since ads is the biggest money earner for Google by a huge margin. None of the Google services are provided “free” out of some benevolence. If you’re using Android, Google has been snooping on you a lot more often than Facebook could dream of.
- sp332 7y agoYou know Google owns an ad network right? They show ads on lots of sites around the internet, not just on Google search results. They use data from Google Analytics to track you around the web.
- ethanbond 7y agoTheir business model.
