Ask HN: Software Industry Maturity
Hi, HN! In the software industry there's always the push to rewrite and "innovate" instead of maintaining applications for decades. Legacy software and technologies are often considered "toxic assets" nobody wants to deal with.
For those who have been developing and/or managing developers for decades, do you think this industry will mature professionally and converge to some region of stability, or are we doomed to always having to replace/rewrite old but reliable applications with trendy tech stacks?
P.S. I'm aware of business- and safety-critical systems running Cobol, PL/I, etc., which are maintained by rather few experts.
However, higher education institutions disregard old tech stacks.
