Julia Roberts was a prostitute which was an illegal job. Stripping is generally not illegal. I also don't recall anything in the movie about her managing anything, but perhaps I missed that. It was quite awhile ago. And if I recall, she encouraged Gere's character to act in a more honest manner. Really, there seems to be very little connection here.
