I wonder if some of the down-votes is from people who have tried to edit large XML files in the past with vi (Note: original vi, not vim) and discovered it chokes and fails to do so, complaining of over-long lines. One of the reasons I switched from vi to Emacs in the very distant past was for this specific reason. (Vim did exist, but it wasn't installed on the old Unix machines I was working on).
