This is why I started guitar lessons at 41. At 30, I didn't because I was upset with myself for not starting when I was 20, and now it was "too late" somehow.

- secondbreakfast 7y agoI am this way about learning Spanish. Hard to focus only a day at a time.
- travisjungroth 7y agoDo what I did and move to Mexico. Then you’re constantly aware your Spanish isn’t improving.
- secondbreakfast 7y agoI've considered living in CDMX for a while for the food people and language. Where in Mexico do/did you live?
- travisjungroth 7y agoI was in Playa del Carmen for a few months. Not a nice place, but great scuba diving. Now I’m in CDMX. It’s great.
- fossuser 7y agoThe funny part about this one is that you can go from zero to really good with under two years of focused practice. Most people don't do focused practice over time because when you're actually forcing yourself to learn and get better at the edge of your ability it's hard. I think people get better in the beginning when they know nothing, but once they know a few things most people just plateau at the level where they can play the couple of things that they know without forcing themselves to get better. Children mostly are forced to do it, with all the advantages and disadvantages of that process. All this is to say in the majority of cases you can trivially catch up if you're interested in learning a new skill.
- Sammi 7y agoThe best part of learning an instrument is that it usually just takes a couple of months of deliberate practice before you can play well enough to enjoy yourself. You don't need to have the finer details in place in order to play a song.
