Advanced chemical warfare agents are absorbed through the skin. You need more than a gas mask, and soldiers don't routinely carry any antidotes. There probably aren't antidotes for most chemical weapons. Frankly, I'm surprised they're not used more often. I think we'll see a massive scale chemical attack this century. There's a lot of political instability fomenting across the planet.
