correct me if I'm wrong, but couldn't a site easily defeat a pihole by return a page with links to ad assets that have IP addresses rather than hostnames? Resolve the hostnames on the server and simply substitute them in the links/scripts/assets

Yes, they could defeat the pihole by hard coding IPs, but that would cause a whole range of other headaches and would most likely not be worth doing.

  Yeah that sounds like a configuration maintenance nightmare for the relatively minuscule population of pi-hole owners.

    Just resolve the IPs of the links as the page is being served.
