How can this possibly be a thing on a device you paid for and own?
I mean, I know how it can be implemented through software, but why is it not illegal?
- jwr 7y agoI suspect what you paid for and what you own is the hardware itself. The rest (software) is licensed on certain terms. I don't think this distinction would hold up in court, though, at least in the EU, where consumer rights are somewhat protected. When you buy a physical device with certain functionality described on the box, you have a reasonable expectation that it will deliver said functionality.
