I am ready for an electric vehicle - but I can't get over how much I dislike the interior of the Model 3 and Y. I hate the single-giant-touchscreen interface they have settled on. I get it, it's cheap for them to produce and it looks 'futuristic.' I firmly believe physical knobs and buttons are better for most things in a car. The Model S and Model X are better, but they're pretty much out of my price range.
I also want a proper SUV/truck - the Model X/Y don't cut it, and don't get me started on the cybertruck...
- _Microft 7y agoI'm convinced that the Model 3 interior is already designed for a self-driving future. The screen is meant to show movies not gauges.
- dstaley 7y agoFWIW, Tesla has been incredibly clear that yes, the Model 3 and Model Y are designed for a self-driving future. They even made sure that they could easily remove the steering wheel and replace it with a cover.
- dcchambers 7y agoI agre with you - but after seeing the progress of self-driving vehicles over the last few years, I think we're still many years away from 100% hands-off, sleep-in-the-back-seat self-driving vehicles. It's been a very quick ramp up to 90% self-driving capability, but the last 10% is going to take a lot longer than people realize.
- smiley1437 7y agoI'll bite - what is it about the Cybertruck that doesn't cut it as a truck for you?
- dcchambers 7y ago- It's the ugliest truck I've ever seen (you can argue that's subjective, sure, but that's my opinion and you asked). I hate the asthetic. It looks like a vehicle from a video game in the N64 era. - The sloped sides of the bed make it impractical for loading stuff in/out. - Have to go to the most expensive tri-motor option to get the most range. Towing capacity on dual-motor is also lower than I would like. - Won't ever see production in its current form anyway because certain features aren't legal/probably never will be. Crumple zones exist for a reason - it's not a good idea to send everyone out there on public roads in a tank with a regular driver license. - Tesla also compares it to other 1/2 Ton pickups (F-150, Silverado 1500, etc) but it's almost certainly in the next class up, the 3/4 Ton F-250, 2500, etc based on its weight, size, and price. When you compare it to those vehicles the capabilities are much less impressive. -- Don't take my complaints the wrong way. I do want a Tesla Truck. I just don't want this Tesla Truck. Give me one that has the style of the Rivian and I'm in. https://rivian.com/r1t/ https://rivian.com/r1t/
- smiley1437 7y agoThanks for the response - I'm not surprised that the looks are what you listed first, - it's amazing the visceral reaction that the design evokes.
