Rewriting an application or library from the ground up is often a joyful experience packed with an immense amount of lessons to learn. Similarly, refactoring an existing application and watching it come back to life can also be a joyful experience packed with an immense amount of lessons to learn. Whether or not you know what you're getting into on either side, you'll learn soon enough, and experiencing both approaches many times over is part of what being a programmer is about.
