What is this backup encrypted with? If I lose my phone, what do I need to restore it to a new phone?
- shawnz 7y agoIt's encrypted with a password you type on the computer, but is stored on the phone. Annoyingly, if you lose the password, the only way to change it (even just for future backups) is resetting all settings on the phone.
- djannzjkzxn 7y agoSounds kind of goofy. Ideally, I could distrust the computer and consider it keylogged, and the phone would transfer already encrypted data to it.
- brigade 7y agoThis has changed - now you can change the password for new backups with the iPhone passcode.
- shawnz 7y agoSince when? I didn't see any such option in iTunes when I was trying last week (maybe it's because I'm using Windows?)
- chrisseaton 7y agoWhy do people care about phone backups anymore? I don't think I have any apps that don't store everything in the cloud. There's nothing of value that's only on my phone. I could toss it in the bin and set up a new one now and not lose anything.
- overcast 7y agoBecause syncing isn't a backup? What happens when you sync corrupted files?
- chrisseaton 7y agoI didn't say syncing was a backup. That's the opposite of what I'm saying. I'm saying that my phone becomes the synced copy. The cloud is the canonical version (backed up separately elsewhere) and my phone becomes a device I can lose or break and not worry about anything so I don't need to back it up. As soon as I create any content on my phone I upload it to the cloud. Take my phone from my hand at any moment and as long as I've had signal in the last few minutes I've lost nothing.
- overcast 7y agoYou asked why people care about backups anymore, and I told you why what you stated is not a solution to it.
- chrisseaton 7y agoI asked about why people care about backing up their phone. My point is the data should not live on the phone. It should live somewhere more durable, and that durable store should then be backed up.
- overcast 7y agoBecause syncing isn't a backup? What happens when you sync corrupted files? Same reason RAID isn't a backup, yet that one continues to crop up.
- larkost 7y agoYou choose the password. Most of Apple's encryption nowadays uses AES (since they have good hardware support for it), so it is probably that.
