I made a project that did news recommendations a few years ago. One major problem I came across while developing it is that there's a trade-off between accuracy and bias. The more accurate recommended articles are to a user's taste, the more they reinforce biases that he or she has. Republicans like right-leaning articles, Democrats like left-leaning articles, etc.
