Looking back, it seems to me that the maintainer was/is in dire need of a vacation. It's easy to become dismissive when you're stressed and burnt out. There even is an issue filed in August where he recognized that he needs help with the project. The mistake seems to have been that no effective countermeasures were taken before things boiled over, but at least now the whole mess has ended on a positive note.
