Having left NYC for Texas 5 years ago, I can confirm the grass is greener on the other side.
- alehul 7y agoWhat part of Texas, and how has it been better? As someone from the northeast, I'm intrigued!
- coding123 7y agoCan't stand the rampant cell towers there, where they literally let people have one, give them money and only the neighbors that live there get screwed.
- blahneverdies 7y agoI'd assume that grass was brown and dead. (But no state taxes would be nice.)
- azimuth11 7y agoThe tech job market in Dallas and Houston is pretty hot.
- LeoTinnitus 7y agoHow's the water? One of the main things that scared me out of Texas living is it's too hot and the water is algae tasting.
- inetknght 7y agoI currently live in Houston. I don't drink tap water directly. It goes through a brita water filter. After that, it's generally fine. As for too hot... I 100% agree. I'd move if I could keep my job. I want to move north where it's cold. But I don't want to move where people are.
- LeoTinnitus 7y agoI feel like North Carolina is the sweet spot right now. I live in Wisconsin so it's hit or miss on summers and winters being too cold or too hot. NC has very comparable summer weather and warmer winter weather, also it doesn't have absurd cost of living like the west coast or NYC.
- reaperducer 7y agoI'd assume that grass was brown and dead. Only if everything you know about Texas you learned from cartoons.
- GhettoChild 7y agoIt rains all the damn time on the coast. You dont even have to water your lawn and it stays green.
- psychometry 7y agoGreener, but also regressive and generally playing catch-up to progress. Texas ranks in the bottom half of states on most quality-of-life rankings.
- corporate_shi11 7y ago"progress" Is that why net immigration to Texas is positive? On what quality of life metrics does Texas rank poorly?
- todd8 7y agoTexas is a really big and diverse state. There are very large remote areas, for example, with poor access to medical care and the schools in some areas may not be up to national averages. However, I presume that you will not be choosing to move to a rural county. Houston has the worlds largest medical center and the neighborhood where I live has some of the best public schools in the country. The web sites and newspapers that rank cities do so by using some sort of strange linear combination of factors, like so many points for having four distinct seasons and so many points for having professional sports teams and so many negative points for having more police per capita, etc. I think that the best way to judge location attractiveness is to look at how people vote with their feet. The states that have a net gain in population have been judged to be better places to live.
- lotsofpulp 7y ago> The states that have a net gain in population have been judged to be better places to live. It depends how wealthy you are. If you make enough money to afford all the niceties of CA, then you won’t see a reason to move to TX.
- bnjms 7y agoDefine regressive and progressive. I see these terms used all the time but I've never seen a description that matched the words.
- mbesto 7y agoHaving lived in NYC, SV, London and Chicago, living in Austin has been dream. That being said, it's pretty clear it's heading towards Seattle levels, which is quickly headed towards SF levels of societal issues.
- throw51319 7y agoWhat about it has been a dream? Very curious as I live in nyc right now and want to make a change. How has NYC stacked against these other places?
- mbesto 7y agoI love NYC. Here are the downsides of NYC that I don't miss (relative to Austin): - High income tax - Far from anything west coast (skiing, mountains, outdoors, SF/LA, etc) - Cold winters. Much easier to get to the caribean in the winter. - Hard to get "out" of the city during the summer that doesn't have stupid logistics (e.g. hamptons). You can get to one of the lakes 15~60 min depending on where you live in Austin. - Everyone talks about work (austin, people don't care what you do for a living) Downsides of Austin: - It's a small town. If you're social, you'll know everyone in about a year. - Opportunity is limited. - Satellite airport (gotta connect via HOU and DFW) - Summers get HOT.
- ardit33 7y agoIn't it too hot on Summers....? How do you deal with the heat...
