I blew out my L5/S1 and I woke up after surgery with almost no pain at all. It depends entirely on the damage. My disc was totally smashed so all the PT in the world wouldn't put it back together. I was 25 when I had surgery though, so god only knows what kind of shit I'll be in when I'm 45. Hoping those stem cell treatments take off.
