I’m curious if it is possible we are being fooled by other scientific hoaxes at this very moment but yet don’t even realize it.

  Of course we are. As Josh Billings is usually quoted these days, "It ain’t what you don’t know that gets you into trouble. It’s what you know for sure that just ain’t so." We are so sure of things that are not true that we don't bother to check.
