I think you're thinking of the classic shifting baseline example. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shifting_baseline https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shifting_baseline It comes up a lot when talking about fisheries stocks, and how each generation basically resets to what is a normal amount of fish.
