Very appealing, but long-lasting software --- grep, SQL, java --- is maintained long after "shipped". The thing that makes it easy for you to create better software, also makes it easy for someone else to do the same to you. They can take your idea, with a slightly different perspective, that makes it better for more people (even if "worse" in terms of what you aimed at). Which is probably what you did to someone else in the first place. aka "progress"
