How is this compared to Kodi?

Kodi is a media player, not a media server. There's a plugin to use kodi as a front-end to jellyfin media server.

But Kodi can just play files off an attached/networked storage and collects all the metadata if need be, so what's the difference?

As answered at https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=21988656 https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=21988656, it has benefits if you have multiple clients.

If you just want to watch local, I would stick with kodi. I actually used both for some time. Emby / Jellyfin for remote + other users and kodi local Now I switched to Kodi + jellyfin addon for local.
