This is a challenge for me because I also felt the need to do the Willy Loman thing for a while but then realized that other people needed me to be more open about negative emotions or pessimism.
But I feel I've gone too far in the other direction now, that if you go through a difficult stretch you can't let yourself be a dark cloud. It doesn't help anything, people want progress, joy, hope, etc.
It's a tricky balance to find, especially since my actual internal experience seems to vary more by week or month than by day.
- Waterluvian 7y agoI think optimism and humour can play a large role in bringing light to a dark time in life. You can be true to yourself and others without being a constant dark cloud. Comedy is, if nothing else, the purest form of honesty.
- tartoran 7y agoI agree, optimism and humor do help a lot. But sometimes a dose of reality, thinking that we all die, that all is temporary, think of all the humanity that was born and died and the cycle will naturally continue makes whatever issue is bothering me less grim.
- Waterluvian 7y agoI think Rick and Morty is so compelling to me for this exact concoction of comedy plus cold hard truth. Life is fleeting, I'm about 1/3 of the way done, am I really that upset about X?
