I don’t have kids, but this seems a bit over the top. Children live in the world with the rest of us, and are exposed to things every day that haven’t been reviewed and approved as child safe. Angry drivers on the road may flip you off or yell at you while your kid is in the car, or someone at a stop light may be blaring music that you find to be offensive and not approved for consumption by children. Both of these things would objectively be scarier than a clown on a computer screen, yet kids see and hear these things every day and somehow most of them don’t grow up to be serial killers. Sure, try your best to shield them from harmful content, but completely shutting down something that is 98% clean, educational, child friendly content seems like throwing the baby out with the bath water.
- zadokshi 7y agoYou clearly have never seen the type of content psychopaths splice into child targeted YouTube videos or you would not be making this argument. We are not talking about some mildly offensive or violent behaviour. We are talking about things that would be illegal to show on prime time TV (child and adult timeslots) 10 great child videos does not make up for 1 psychopathic murder scene spliced into video 11
- downandout 7y agoOP made no mention of “psychopathic murder scenes”. He referred to clowns coming out unexpectedly, which seems in poor taste on the part of the video creator but is a far cry from a “psychopathic murder scene”. I am quite certain that if such a scene were spliced into any video I watched, even as an adult, I would never watch YouTube again, and I would make some mention of it on social media. We live in a culture where even the slightest faux pas sparks widespread outrage across social media, yet I have never heard of this being a significant issue. So it seems like this is not a common occurrence. Have you ever personally witnessed a “psychopathic murder scene” being spliced into a YouTube video? Do 10% of videos really have this in them? I have never seen it once, in well over a decade of relatively heavy YouTube use. Most of my friends are in the tech scene and have children, and none of them have ever mentioned this as an issue either.
