I am just using major.YYYYMMDD.HHMMSS for some of my projects, e.g. https://pypi.org/project/better_exchook/ https://pypi.org/project/better_exchook/ has the latest release 1.20191227.150050. I have never thought about version numbers for these projects anymore.
