The Halting Problem (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Halting_problem http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Halting_problem) talks about this. For individual algorithms, one can determine if it will halt or not. However, no general algorithm exists. The hard part is that the algorithm to cause the code to halt has to be specially crafted for every algorithm.
- Retric 16y agoThe Halting Problem can be sidestepped by having a system say "I don't know" in edge cases. So it's possible to write code that can classify code as "safe" even if it misses some "safe" code that's more complex than it can handle.
