The irony is that the US system is nowhere near the “free market”. Subsidies abound for the rich and the poor and old get free single-payer healthcare in the form of Medicare and Medicaid. Meanwhile veterans also have an entire single-payer system for themselves. The relatively few who “pay their own way” face incredible costs as few of the health providers actually compete for customers in an open and free market and so they charge crazy prices and get away with it.
