"Heavy"? I guess if you like writing code in VI that would be true.
Otherwise, Visual Studio is the best IDE on the market hands down. There's simply nothing else that can touch it.
- Silhouette 7y agoUsing an IDE like Visual Studio is helpful if you're developing a native Windows application, but what if you're writing embedded code for some new device and need cross-compiled C and assembly language, or you want a workbook-style presentation of data processing you're doing in Python, or you're writing some fancy isomorphic SPA for a new website, or you're researching new proof techniques for high reliability systems in Idris? The world of programming is far, far bigger than just making native applications targeting desktop OSes, and the tools that are useful for different kinds of programming go way beyond things like editors and debuggers.
- jki275 7y agoAs I said, if you like writing code in VI. The vast majority of what I do is C or C++, and I do as much of it as I can in Xcode or VS even if I have to cross-compile it later to run on the machines it's written for. A good IDE is worth its weight in gold, and VS is the best.
- Silhouette 7y agoThe vast majority of what I do is C or C++ Given your comments here, that makes sense, but there is a whole world of other programming languages used in other ways out there, and what you use to edit your code or even debug it is far from the only tool that matters. In many of those languages, the best tools and newest developments typically happen on UNIX first. I'm not sure why this is such a difficult thing to acknowledge, but anyway, this discussion doesn't seem to be going anywhere useful so perhaps we should stop here.
- jki275 7y agoIt makes little sense to talk about other languages in discussing VS, given that C, C#, and C++ are the primary supported languages there. Obviously if you're doing other things you're doing other things.
