For people who are considering switching away from Chrome - give Brave a try, it's really good.
I was a bit reluctant for a while because their branding is weird and there's too much focus on their crypto ad model. But if you switch the crypto stuff off, you have a fork of Chrome that performs just as well and also has a few additional privacy features and isn't linked to your Google account. Highly recommend.
- earenndil 7y agoOr just ungoogled chromium. Brave is bizarre and terrible. The idea of trying to replace ad-tech as it currently exists is great, and I welcome any experimentation thereunto. That said, brave does it wrong, and I don't think it's a good idea to support that; even without using their ad-tech feature, it still gives them mind- and market-share, and propagates their ad system elsewhere.
- yalooze 7y agoVivaldi is another Chrome fork with a strong focus on privacy. From the original creators of Opera.
- computerfriend 7y agoVivaldi is non-free and closed source.
- anon_alchemist 7y agoBrave blocks all ads and provides its own "ad platform" which basically means that they curate what ads you will see. I fail to see how their model could fix what is wrong with facebook or google.
- psv1 7y agoTheir ad model is what gets discussed every time Brave comes up and it's irrelevant to me - I block all ads myself regardless of the browser. My point is that if you switch ads off in Brave, you end up with a really good browsing experience, better than Chrome + adblock or Firefox + adblock.
- anthk 7y agoGet Falkon, much better.
- kgwxd 7y agoFor me, a browser has to support uBlock Origin, as it works today. I don't want the browser vendor deciding how ads and trackers get blocked, it's a conflict of interest and it's never been done better than uBO anyway. Won't all chromium based browser break proper ad/tracker blocking once that manifest v3 thing happens?
- hydgv 7y agoBrave said they wouldn't. Who knows. I switched and I'm liking it a lot thus far, but if they implement manifest v3, all that will remain of me will be a puff of smoke
