Compare to Little Bighorn, 14 years later, with ~146 native deaths and 268 deaths in the 7th Cavalry. I wonder why Custer's last stand is so much more well known.
- 5555624 7y agoThe Dakota War took place "out west," as it were, during the middle of the Civil War. The Battle of Fredericksburg was 13 December 1862. That one battle resulted in Union casualties of close to 13,000 and Confederate casualties of around 5,000. The events in Minnesota were simply overshadowed. In addition, in 1876, not much else was happening and Custer was rather well-known.
