Google has an undeniable monopoly on search, and a near-monopoly on web browsing software via Chrome and its forks.
Why is Chrome a monopoly? It doesn't even come pre-installed with Windows.
- the8472 7y agoIt will soon, in the form of Edge.
- vntok 7y agoAre you advocating for the return of a "Choose your Browser" panel like that one that was forced onto Windows a few years back?
- vengefulduck 7y agoThe new edge uses chromium under the hood.
- nova22033 7y agoAnd using Chromium for Edge was entirely Microsoft's choice. They weren't forced to use it because they had no other choice.
- the8472 7y agoDoesn't change that it gives more power to google to shape web technologies.
- wreck 7y agoEdge uses the Chromium engine. That's what the author meant by forks.
- Nasrudith 7y agoOf course counting forks as part of a monopoly is nonsensical as a metric in the first place. It would be like calling Burger King and all fast food using order counters and drive throughs as a monopoly on burger restuarants. I wonder how long until we see a "It is not RICO" counterpart to monopoly given how en vogue it is in talking points.
- paulddraper 7y agoIf a cattle ranch supplied 90% of all beef, then they would have a monopoly. Regardless of whether it was prepared by McD, BK, Wendy's.
