My personal experience with speed reading is that the limiting bottleneck factor for me is the speed at which i can internalize complex grammatical structures. I also sub-vocalize some words but not others. In fact, the claim that one must sub-vocalize every word is contradicted by my experience reading Chinese characters, sometimes I can understand characters without knowing how to say them.
