Is this a "modest proposal" or an actual argument against usability?

    Actually, it was an honest question. I've always assumed that metaphors were a good thing in UI, and was surprised to see an argument against them. The best writing is often found where you can't tell if the author was being sarcastic, and to me, this read like that.
