Ben Franklin even wrote about it, wishing that the German and Swedish immigrant numbers were decreased in favor of UKish immigrants, noting that their numbers were eclipsing the English. Before world war 1, lots of the USA spoke German, some places much more than English. Then sentiments... changed, towards anglicizing the country.
