While all these metrics show progress, nationalism is on the rise. Echo-chambers are on the rise. People do not listen to each other, especially when it comes to politics. Social media has eroded privacy. Advertisement is king. Global warming is a huge "soft" risk to humanity. Surveillance is rampant as we heard from Snowden in 2013. China is a complete totalitarian state with 6 million cameras and a social credit score. Indian democracy is tearing apart.
Good stuff: Private space industry's progress is jaw dropping. SpaceX, RocketLab, BlueOrigin, Boeing, etc are all doing incredible things. Incredible progress in ML/AI. NASA is planning for a moon mission, there is excitement to go to Mars.
My hope for the 20s: The intellectuals form a world-citizen class movement, nationalism would be shamed and looked down upon (regardless of nation), citizens wake up to privacy issues and next round of politicians have libertarian ideologies. I hope.
- mavhc 7y agoNot going to happen, sorry. Global climate catastrophe will cause even more increases in migration, causing more nationalism, and more right wing politics. Why else would ring wing politicians deny it exists?, to cause more climate change, and more migration, to get more votes.
- chance_state 7y ago>The intellectuals form a world-citizen class movement I think unfortunately the elite class has morphed into an extractive leech on lower classes to an extent we haven't seen in recent history in the west. This helps explain the rise of nationalism, xenophobia, etc. This title would be better corrected to "The 2010s Have Been Amazing *For the Type of Person with a WSJ Subscription".
- mopsi 7y ago> nationalism would be shamed and looked down upon Why should regional self-governance by likeminded people be replaced with lowest-common-denominator global government? In tech terms, attitudes like these sound like everyone in the world should adopt the same set of values and use the same programming language, which would be Javascript if chosen democratically, or Ada if chosen by experts. :)
- elfexec 7y ago> While all these metrics show progress... " China is a complete totalitarian state with 6 million cameras and a social credit score." China is responsible for much of those metrics showing progress around the world. Of the worldwide decline in poverty and improvement in living standards, most of it is due to china. It's hilarious the cognitive dissonance when it comes to china. If there was a political entity that did the most good for humanity - it was china's "authoritarians". They took nearly a billion people out of poverty in the past few decades. > My hope for the 20s: The intellectuals form a world-citizen class movement, nationalism would be shamed and looked down upon (regardless of nation) My hope is for the opposite. The rise of nationalism since it is nationalism that helped the world improve so much. Take singapore/south korea/japan/taiwan/china/etc. It was nationalists who took their countries from poverty to wealth. Hopefully a rise in nationalism in the US will help solve so much of our problems. A people should be proud of themselves and their nation. But most importantly, the politicians and the elites should be working for the interests of the nation. > citizens wake up to privacy issues Agreed. But more importantly, the elites should wake up to the privacy issues. Sadly, citizens don't amount to much in a democracy. Change always comes from the top. > next round of politicians have libertarian ideologies. But it was authoritarians who improved the living standards around the world, not libertarians or libertarianism. Just like communism, libertarianism doesn't have much of a track record to be proud of.
