I use Gmail for all my mail and in general it works great. If you use Thunderbird or other mail client you can always have a copy of all your emails on your computer. A more interesting approach will be to use a USB drive for storing your emails, you can simply plug the stick in your Windows, Mac or Linux computer and use your email. This is completely OS agnostic because Thunderbird uses text files for configuration.
