In terms of scale of the planet’s life, the amount of time we are here is extremely short. The earth has been struck by at least one large rock resulting in mass extinctions. The planet recovered just fine along with the atmosphere, but there was significant change to the life left over. I also believe Earth will be fine this time, and there is some balancing factor that will eventually correct the changes to the atmosphere, but we and the majority of life on the planet will have difficulty surviving in the interim period.
