Stamping out murder only has pushed it underground! Stamping out rape has only pushed it underground! Stamping out kidnapping has only pushed it underground! I long for the day all of these practices can be legalized and done safely and in the open!
- brutt 7y agoMurdering of idiots is beneficial for society! Let's make it legal. We can't stop wars anyway.
- yters 7y agoWhile we are at if, why not get rid of all laws? Then everything is legal and crime will drop to zero!
- Woberto 7y agoThese all seem like false equivalences. I think it should be "stamping out _online_ murder" etc. And this makes more sense - if people can no longer pursue illegal activities online, they may do so in person. Which I still think is an improvement, because I think it's harder to commit some of these crimes in person.
- yters 7y agoOh I didn't realize people were only having sex with kids in virtual reality. Then I agree, better to keep that virtual instead of having them do it real life. Thanks for clearing things up for me!
- tenebrisalietum 7y agoTruly voluntary prostitution isn't the same as murder, rape, or kidnapping. People have to work to survive. Some people make so little at work that if they lost that job, they'd be homeless or suffer other harm. And, most people would rather not be at work. Companies often provide this work. Are workers slaves? Are companies exploiting workers? If that type of worker-company relationship is morally permissible, then on some level prostitution has to be as well.
- abfan1127 7y agothe metric I use is mutually consenting? Do both parties consent to the agreement? Then it should be legal. Do I consent to trade XXX for YYY with a company or other individual? Does the company/individual consent to trade YYY for XXX? I don't consent to murder, rape, or kidnapping of myself, nor do I consent to do those to others.
- tenebrisalietum 7y agoUnfortunately this doesn't take into account some nuances. For example: A homeless, jobless woman who engages in acts of prostitution simply to eat is consenting technically, but most would say this situation shouldn't exist. But marriages do happen all the time for economic reasons...
- dragonsngoblins 7y agoWell yes obviously that situation shouldn't exist, though I feel like the correct way to avoid it is to provide aid to those in need to stop her being that desperate in the first place. Because if she is so desperate as to do do it solely to avoid starvation she would do it regardless of whether or not it was legal
- abfan1127 7y agoShouldn't exist? If its really her only option, who are you (or anyone else) to take it away? Unless its not really her only option, then who are you to take away her choice?
- tenebrisalietum 7y agoWhat I am saying is X really a choice if the alternative to choosing X is suffering harm, such as starvation, lack of shelter, etc.
- antientropic 7y agoNobody is proposing that sex trafficking should be legalized. On the wider issue of prostitution, there is a fundamental difference between it and the crimes you mentioned: murder, rape and kidnapping are always wrong, regardless of whether money is involved. On the other hand, most people don't have a problem with sex between consenting adults; they only have a problem with it if there is payment involved. This of course raises the question why an otherwise acceptable act becomes immoral when it is in exchange for money...
