I think Open source will win in the long run. Simply because there are more software engineers working on open source software than there is on closed software. So from an economic standpoint closed software cannot compete. This is true of even very large corporations.
Hopefully IBM will open source Spectrum scale / GPFS general parallel file system and integrate that with Red Hat.
- robertfw 7y ago> there are more software engineers working on open source software than there is on closed software I would have thought that the opposite is the case; most engineers work on closed source software
- buzzkillington 7y agoBy orders of magnitude. The OPs talking point sounds like the typical one of someone who has not been in the belly of the beast to see how corporate is using open source. Which is endless unofficial forks of everything forever. Open source has lost. It's time for something new.

- pinewurst 7y agoI wouldn’t hold my breath waiting for that. Besides being an enormous old code base, IBM is well aware that it’s their primary unique storage value prop for an installed base they hold by the dangly bits (with Oracle-like surprise license audits too!). Many of whom would jump to an open source version and ditch the dubious support that today’s IBM offers.
